They still say we at family lunch. That is not love. That is performance of a couple for the groupchat.
Wednesday night.
The calendar on the fridge still says we.
Soccer. Dentist. Her mother's birthday. His work thing that always runs late. Two colours of marker, one household. The kettle boils. Someone asks if there is milk. Someone already knows the answer and asks anyway so the other person has to get up.
They are not fighting.
That is the tell.
Fighting would mean the relationship still had a pulse worth arguing over. This is quieter. The structure is standing. The insides went hollow months ago. Maybe years. Nobody put a date on it because dating the death would make it real, and real has a moving van attached.
They still say we at family lunch.
That is not love.
That is performance of a couple for the groupchat.
Quiet quitting the marriage is not a break up.
A break up is a door. This is a holding pattern with shared Wi-Fi.
You keep the lease language. You keep the school pickup choreography. You keep the Christmas story so nobody has to rewrite the seating plan. You stop bringing your actual self to the person who sleeps eight metres away.
Emotional account: zero.
Operations account: still debiting every day.
Australian coverage has been chewing on this for a reason. Soften the mastheads. The behaviour is older than the name. People have been staying in hollow marriages since before TikTok could label them. What changed is the honesty rate. More people will say the quiet part: I left without leaving.
To be fair, not every quiet house is a dead marriage. Some couples go through flat seasons and come back. Some are protecting kids through a hard year with a plan. Some are tired, not finished.
The difference shows up in one place.
Is anybody still trying to be known, or only trying to be uninterrupted?
The autopsy is usually not cinematic.
It is dishes.
Who rinses. Who loads. Who pretends not to see the sink because seeing it would create a job.
School appointments. Who booked the dentist. Who noticed the kid needs new shoes. Who knows there is no milk. Who remembers the birthday present for your mother. Who has the password to the sports registration portal. Who carries the invisible project plan of the household while the other person gets to be "bad at admin."
That fight is not about chores.
It is about who got turned into infrastructure.
Sometimes marriages do not die from infidelity. Sometimes they die because one person became operations manager of a company the other person still thinks is a romance.
One partner is running unpaid household ops: logistics, emotion regulation, social memory, school systems, the soft work that keeps the machine from catching fire. The other partner is still waiting for the relationship to feel like a feeling. Both can be lonely inside the same roster.
If you only measure love by roses and date nights, you will miss the COO in the kitchen until she is gone in every way except the lease.
Then there is the lock.
Leaving costs money.
We already named that in Too Broke. Rent as the third person. Housing as intimacy policy. Do not rehash the whole map. Just hold the receipt: presence would mean telling the truth even if the truth needs a moving van. Most people cannot afford the van. So they soft exit instead. Stay in the house. Split the bill. Call it complicated.
It is not complicated.
It is the cost of dignity colliding with the cost of exit.
Kids make the collision heavier. Not because children need a fake marriage. Because children need adults who can tell the truth without turning them into messengers. Quiet quitting often sells itself as stability for the kids. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is adults using the kids as cover for their own fear of the bond, the lawyer, the second fridge, the question at family lunch.
Dignity cuts both ways.
Do not dunk on the woman who checked out after years of carrying the ops. Do not dunk on the man who went mute when the scoreboard of provide-protect-perform stopped making sense. Dunking is content. The ledger is better.
Who stopped being chosen.
Who started being trapped.
Who still gets to be a person, and who got promoted to unpaid management.
Composite scene. Same roof. Separate lives.
He comes home. Headphones on before the door fully closes. She is at the table with forms. She asks one question about the weekend. He says, yeah, whatever works. She stops asking. He calls that peace. She calls that evidence.
At family lunch they pass the salad and use we.
In the car home nobody talks.
That night she updates the shared calendar. He likes a meme about marriage being hard. Neither of them is lying in a courtroom sense. Both of them are lying in a presence sense.
Performance asks you to keep the household looking fine.
Presence would mean one hard conversation and a plan that might blow up the current floor plan.
Most people pick performance because performance is cheaper this month.
The bill arrives later as numbness, affairs that start as "just talking," kids who learn that love is logistics, or a sudden walkaway that looks sudden only to the person who was not reading the silence.
Quiet quitting is armour with a joint account.
It protects you from the chaos of leaving. It also protects you from the risk of being fully seen by the person you once chose on purpose.
AU first: this country is good at keeping it light until the light becomes a lie. World welcome: hollow partnership under economic pressure is not an Australian invention. The human ledger travels.
Attention. Safety. Control. Being chosen versus being trapped.
If you are still saying we while your nervous system has already moved out, you are not confused.
You are quiet quitting.
And the only question that still spends is not who is the villain.
It is this:
Are you staying because you are building something, or because leaving would force you to tell the truth out loud?
