The Good Man Trap
Being easy to love can cost the self you were supposed to bring. When yes is performed, or no must be morally discredited, the relationship starts lying.

Kitchen light in Surry Hills. A Tuesday that should have been nothing.
She asks if he is fine with the weekend. Jess already booked the house in Kiama. Partners optional. In the groupchat someone has already typed bring him if he can handle us, with the laugh that means they already know he will. He hears the shape of the question before the words finish. He feels the small heat in his chest that means he does not want it. Then he feels the second heat, the one that says wanting something else will make him look difficult.
So he says it.
It's fine.
She softens. The room softens. He gets the quiet reward of being easy. Later he is alone with the dishes. A plate still soapy in his hand when the fine comes back up, wrong in his stomach like food he did not choose.
I know that sentence from the inside.
I have said it to keep the peace, to keep the image, to keep being the man who does not make a scene. I told myself understanding was love. What I was practising was disappearance with good manners.
I am writing the disappearance I have done. Not because women never erase themselves. Because this is the one I have the authority to write from the body.
There is a trap that sells itself as character.
Call it the good man trap if you need a name. It is the habit of confusing secure, tolerant, peaceful, evolved with the suppression of a real preference. You learn to arrive as soft furniture. You learn that your job is not to be known. Your job is to be easy to love.
Provision shows up first in some houses. Bills paid. Car fixed. Kids dropped. Emotional body missing. In other houses it is the opposite load. One person decides everything, then cries in the shower so the other person never has to hear a preference become a sentence. Blank agreeableness is not presence. Neither is carrying the whole nervous system of the couple and calling it loyalty.
Both versions share a shadow.
Performance.

You perform goodness so people will not leave. You perform chill so nobody can call you insecure. You perform fine so the night stays smooth. The addiction underneath is older than the relationship. Being seen as good. Being chosen for not taking up space. Being needed as the one who never complicates the room.
That is strategy dressed as virtue.
You get chosen for a version of you that cannot afford to exist.
Not every yes is the same yes.
Some yeses arrive hot and clear. Body leans in. Eyes do not flinch. That is the real one. Some yeses arrive unsure, and the person still chooses to try with a hand on the brake. That can be honest too. Some yeses are a trade you make with your eyes open. You prefer another road. You still choose this one without anyone attacking who you are.
Then there are the other two.
The performed yes. You do not want the thing. You agree anyway to keep approval, avoid conflict, avoid looking jealous, prevent abandonment, or keep being easy. The coerced yes. Your no got worn down. Or your no got morally discredited until sure became the only exit left that still looked like love.
Do not collapse those into one pile.
A reluctant start can still be a clean trade if agency stays in the room. A smiling fine after weeks of pressure is not that. Love as motive appears in both stories. Love alone does not tell you which honesty you are in.
When the good man finally finds a no, the room often rewrites him.
You changed. You became selfish. You used to be easy.
Sometimes that protest is real grief for a soft contract ending. Sometimes it is the sound of a benefit stream stopping. Stopping the people-pleaser script can repair a bond that was starving for an actual person. It can also rupture what only worked while one person stayed erased. There is no single ending.
I have watched myself fear the swing the other way. The anxiety that if I stand up I will become a bully. That fear keeps some people quiet longer than love does. Presence is not a costume change into hardness. Presence is bringing a preference into the light and letting the other person bring theirs. It includes the right to refuse a yes you suspect is theatre. It includes the right to hear jealousy without turning it into a character assassination.
There is also the gratitude trap.
He provides. She has what the forms call security. Naming the loneliness risks sounding ungrateful, so the loneliness learns to whisper. Or she carries every decision and every bill and every soft repair of the day, and he calls the silence peace. Gratitude becomes a muzzle. Provision becomes an alibi. The invoice inside the goodness stays hidden until somebody is already gone in every way except the lease.
What is kindness secretly trying to purchase?
Attention. Safety. Control. Proof that you deserve to stay. Proof that you will not be left if you never become difficult.
That is the cost of being easy to love.
You get chosen for a version of you that cannot afford to exist.
Do not dunk on the person who went along. Do not dunk on the person who asked and heard fine. Dunking is content. The ledger is better. Who disappeared to keep the bond. Who needed the disappearance to feel free. Who still gets to be a person with a preference that can survive daylight.
I am here to put the mechanism on the table. You can look. You can flinch. You can decide.
We are fluent at keeping it light until the light becomes a lie.
If your peace required your disappearance, it was not peace.
If your goodness has a hidden invoice, name the invoice before the bond collects it for you.
The work, if you want it, is smaller than a manifesto.
Next time the heat rises and the fine is already forming in your mouth, pause long enough to feel which yes you are about to sell. Enthusiastic. Uncertain but free. Trade with eyes open. Performance. Or something worn down by pressure and shame.
Then say the true one.
Or say you need a night to find it.
Either way, stop purchasing love with a self that is not in the room.
