You Can't Read Silence

Two camps are arguing over which masculinity is broken.

The men going quiet already stopped listening to either one.

That is the part the debate keeps missing.

One camp says men need more empathy, more accountability, more emotional availability. They call it relational masculinity. They have the therapy language, the think-pieces, the university research behind them. They are not wrong that something is wrong.

The other camp says the system is rigged, the rules keep changing, and men are being penalised for being men. They have the podcasts, the grievance, the numbers. They are not wrong that something is wrong either.

Two different diagnoses. Same patient.

And the patient has quietly left the building.

A record number of men are opting out of dating. Not because they cannot find someone. Because the emotional maths stopped adding up. Ghosting. Invested weeks into building something real, sent the last message, watched the read receipt appear, waited. Nothing. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. At some point a man stops calling it bad luck and starts calling it the cost of entry. And he decides the price is too high.

Fifty-eight percent of men now want exclusivity within the first few dates. Forty-nine percent of women do. That gap is not small. That gap is two people sitting across a table from each other, both thinking they are on the same page, neither one realising the other is reading from a different book entirely.

And the response to male loneliness? Two camps, still arguing.

Nobody thought to ask the man who already went home.

The Calculation

Here is what actually happens before a man opens his mouth.

He runs a number.

Not consciously. Not with a spreadsheet. But somewhere in the body, before the words come out, there is a calculation. Fast. Automatic. Built from every previous time he said the thing and watched the room change.

What are the odds this lands wrong? What are the odds I get labeled before I finish the sentence? What are the odds she hears something I did not mean? What are the odds this gets used against me later? What are the odds I say I am struggling and the response is a diagnosis of my character rather than a conversation about what I am actually going through?

If the odds are bad, he does not say it.

Simple as that.

This is not emotional damage. This is not childhood trauma presenting as avoidance. This is not the broken masculinity both camps are arguing about.

This is a rational man doing rational risk assessment.

And he has done it enough times to know the result before he runs it.

Emotionally unavailable means the feeling is not there. Strategically quiet means the feeling is very much there, and the man has learned exactly what happens to it when he lets it out. He has watched it get minimised. Reframed. Weaponised in the argument two months later. Diagnosed as a red flag. Sent back to him with a different label on it.

So he keeps it.

And everybody around him wonders why he never talks.

The Vacancy

This is where the manosphere enters the story. And I want to be clear about how it enters it.

Getting something from this? The List sends the next essay first, free, Sunday mornings.

Not as a villain.

As a contractor who showed up when the house was empty.

The manosphere is now a multi-million dollar business. Supplements. Paid communities. High-ticket coaching. Men paying hundreds a month to sit in a Discord server and feel like somebody understands them. The exposé pieces frame this as predatory grifters monetising vulnerable men.

That framing is not wrong. But it stops too soon.

Because the question that matters is not, "How did these grifters find isolated men?"

The question is, "What was already there when they arrived?"

A room has to be very empty before a stranger's voice starts sounding like company.

The man paying for the community is not stupid. He is not broken. He looked around his actual life and made a calculation. Formal therapy felt like another place where his experience would be reframed as a symptom. His mates were not talking either. His family did not know how to start. His workplace had psychological safety posters on the wall and a culture that would end his career if he used them honestly.

So he found a room where someone was at least speaking his language.

The grift works not because men are gullible. It works because the alternative is nothing. You cannot shame men away from the manosphere without building something worth going to instead. Outrage at the grifters does not help the man who is sitting alone at eleven on a Tuesday night, not sure whether what he is feeling is grief or anger or just exhaustion, and not sure where he would go with it if he knew.

The vacancy is the story.

Not the contractor who filled it.

What Gets Filed

Men learn by filing results.

Every time a man said something honest and the room closed on him, he filed it. Not in a journal. Not consciously. In the body. In the calibration of how much to give next time.

He said he was struggling at work. The response was, "Have you tried exercise?"

Filed.

He said he was hurt by something she did. The response was a counter-list of things he had done wrong over the past six months.

Filed.

He cried once. Not in a big dramatic way. Just let something through. The moment passed. She never mentioned it again. He was not sure if that was kindness or discomfort. He never found out.

Filed.

He told a mate he was going through it. The mate said, "Yeah, mate, that's rough." Then they talked about football.

Filed.

None of these are catastrophes. None of them are trauma. Each one on its own is just a normal moment in a normal life.

But the file builds up.

And eventually the file says: speaking costs more than it returns. Keep it in. Handle it yourself. You are better at carrying this alone than you are at watching people not know what to do with it.

That is how a man learns to go quiet.

Not from one big wound. From a thousand small calculations that all came back the same way.

The Burnout Connection

Forty percent of Australian workers are currently burnt out. Forty-three percent of them under thirty. The biggest driver is not the work itself. It is the gap between what the organisation says and what the organisation does.

Inappropriate workload. Lack of management support. Conditions that cannot be negotiated. A psychological safety framework on the intranet that nobody in the building actually uses because everyone already knows what happens to the person who does.

That is the same calculation.

Is it worth saying something? Will the manager hear it as feedback or as a performance problem? Will HR treat it as a wellbeing concern or as a liability issue? Will being honest about being overwhelmed be handled with support, or will the next performance review quietly reflect that I am not a "resilient" person?

The man who has already learned to file results at home runs the same model at work.

He already knows the answer before he raises his hand.

So he keeps his head down, delivers the output, absorbs the extra work, and does not mention the cost. Because the alternative is worse than exhaustion. The alternative is being seen as the problem.

And the organisation looks around and wonders why nobody ever says anything.

You Cannot Argue With Silence

This is the part both camps have not figured out.

The relational masculinity camp says: you need to be more open. You need to be vulnerable. You need to let people in. They are not wrong. Vulnerability is the way through. But you cannot instruct a man into vulnerability. You cannot tell someone it is safe to speak when his entire nervous system has been trained by evidence that it is not.

The grievance masculinity camp says: the deck is stacked, the system is against you, here is someone who gets it. They are not wrong that the deck sometimes is stacked. But a man who channels that into resentment ends up more isolated than the one who said nothing at all. The grievance keeps him company, but it does not get him anywhere.

Both camps are loud.

The men opting out are not.

You cannot reach someone who has already decided the conversation is not worth having. Not with a better argument. Not with a softer frame. Not with a podcast episode or a statistic or a well-intentioned think-piece about which masculinity is more broken.

You reach him by making the alternative actually different from what the file predicts.

Not by telling him he should try again.

By being someone he could try again with.

That means when he says something small, you do not turn it into a lesson. When he admits something costs him, you do not use it later. When he is quiet, you do not rush to fill the silence with your interpretation of why he is quiet.

You just wait.

Because silence is not nothing.

Silence is a man who has been burned enough times that he needs to see the room is actually different before he walks back in.

You cannot argue him in.

You cannot shame him in.

You cannot debate which version of masculinity is more broken while the man you are trying to reach sits in a paid Discord server at eleven on a Tuesday night, choosing that over the real thing.

The only way in is through the door he still has open.

And the only way to find that door is to stop talking long enough to notice he left one.
